You'll be just feet away from the musicians — near enough to hear the breath before a phrase, to watch a bow land. No pit, no distance, no screen. Just the sound arriving before you've had a chance to decide how you feel about it. Over the course of the evening, Horror de Cámara moves through the full range of what chamber music can do with dread.
Mexico City's Jimena Contreras, who scores horror video games, has written a suite drawn from Mexican folk monsters, stories told to children in the dark. Felipe Pérez Santiago turns toward the horrors of war. And Austin's Graham Reynolds has expanded his score for Ballet Austin's Poe, all held breath and rising tension.

Pérez Santiago conducts an ensemble of Austin's finest: Alexis Buffum (violin), Taylor Wang (piano), Kenzie Slottow (flute), Ilia De La Rosa (cello), and Joey Colarusso (clarinet). The commission comes to Austin as the newest chapter of Golden Hornet's MXTX: Cross-Border Series, which pairs Texas and Mexican artists on the premise that two music communities can become one by building something together. This one they built out of the things that scare us all.
